DÉCIMO ANIVERSARIO DE LA ASOCIACIÓN PARA LA RECUPERACIÓN DE LA MEMORIA HISTÓRICA

El próximo 23 de octubre se cumplen diez años de la exhumación de la primera fosa común, con víctimas de la represión franquista, realizada con técnicas arqueológicas y forenses. En esos días de octubre del año 2000 fueron recuperados los restos de trece civiles republicanos, asesinados el 16 de octubre de 1936 en la localidad leonesa de Priaranza del Bierzo.

De esa exhumación surgió la Asociación para la Recuperación de la Memoria Histórica, que a partir de ese momento inició un movimiento social de búsqueda de desaparecidos y desaparecidas como consecuencia de la represión franquista que ha evolucionado en el tiempo y además de dar reparación a cientos de familias ha abierto un debate necesario para transformar la patológica relación de nuestra sociedad con su pasado.

Para conmemorar esa fecha hemos preparado unas jornadas y un concierto homenaje. Queremos reflexionar acerca de lo que ha ocurrido en estos años, hablar de lo que está por venir y agradecer a mucha gente su labor que ha permitido que cientos de familias hayan encontrado una reparación que no han recibido de las instituciones.

Además, del 18 al 24 de octubre podrá verse la exposición: "Abriendo fosas, recuperando dignidades", en la sala de exposiciones del Edificio de Servicios del Campus de Ponferrada, en horario de 10:00 a 14:00 y de 16:00 a 20:00. Los cuarenta paneles han sido elaborados por la Sociedad de Ciencias Aranzadi y en ellos se explican en cinco bloques todos los pasos desde que se investiga un caso de desaparición hasta que los restos son devueltos y honrados públicamente. Dentro de la exposición se muestra una impresionante fotografía a tamaño real de una fosa común exhumada en el monte burgalés de La Andaya.

Paleopathology – Shedding light on the past using novel strategies and conclusions

Aims of the meeting
The objective of the 18th PPA Meeting is to shed light on the many aspects of human health in the past from the Palaeolithic to modern times in order to discover the complex interaction between individuals and their environment and to investigate the degree of physical stress to which the members of early societies were exposed. Contributions, which aim to discuss novel methods and their possible limits and prospects are highly welcome, in particular when they critically deal with the potential of non-invasive (µCT) and invasive methods (e.g., REM, SEM-BSE-mode), aDNA-analysis techniques and protein diagnostics, respectively. Just recently, overused muscle insertions have become of particular interest, since these anomalies will enable us to reconstruct working activities and to get an idea of the social system and care of severely incapacitated individuals within these early groups. Pathologically altered ancient human skeletal remains are not only of historical interest, they can also reveal much to modern clinicians, who rarely have the opportunity to identify severe pathological alterations (due to modern medicine).

Background
In the past twenty years molecular anthropology has had an increasing role in the wider context of physical anthropology, of which it became one of the most rapidly growing and promising sectors (primate phylogeny, population history, world human migrations, adaptation).

Molecular anthropology has also moved beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries. We will just cite the investigations of any possible parallelism between cultural and genetic differentiation of human societies and the genetic study of complex diseases. In the medical frame of association studies, several scholars are investigating the genetic structure of human populations and their demographic history to design more appropriate samples. Further and more recent developments concern pharmacogenetic studies aimed at developing more effective drugs.

In recent times, it has been increasingly difficult to maintain the holistic approach that has inspired molecular anthropology in last decades. If, on the one hand, there is the need to foster multidisciplinary collaborations (with genetic epidemiologists, archaeologists, primatologists, etc), on the other hand the increasing amount of discovered polymorphisms requires a methodological and theoretical update that pushes towards hyper specialization.

Aims
The structure of the meeting is to present state-of-art research continent by continent since, as a matter of fact, the research of many colleagues is geographically focused. Our objective is to contribute examples and ideas that will drive further integration of molecular anthropology and other research fields and disciplines. Particular attention will be given to the impact of new analytical methods but also, and more traditionally, to updated and comprehensive syntheses about human diversity since browsing the ever growing literature requires an enormous time that acts as a barrier among specialists of different areas.

The last day will be devoted to human evolutionary research in an interdisciplinary frame. Theories and approaches will be discussed in a challenging way by putting face-to-face molecular anthropologists and experts from other disciplines. We are putting much energy in organizing this latter session since we wish to emphasize the dangers of the hyper specialization mentioned above.

Pese al indudable éxito de resultados, asistencia y participación de las Quintas Jornadas, en la presente convocatoria se volverá al esquema anterior de tres sesiones articuladas en torno a tres grandes temas:

1ª Sesión: Espacios y estructuras de producción:
Producción y transformación de materias primas desde la prehistoria hasta tiempos recientes, paisajes de producción, estructuras de producción en yacimientos arqueológicos, arqueología de la economía, innovaciones metodológicas en el registro de elementos industriales-artesanales, etc.

2ª Sesión: Los contextos funerarios desde una perspectiva interdisciplinar:
Nuevas perspectivas de registro y análisis de los contextos funerarios, interpretación de estructuras de comportamiento ritual a partir de los datos de la cultura material, nuevas aportaciones de los contextos funerarios al conocimiento de las sociedades antiguas, etc.

3ª Sesión: Arqueología y Medios de comunicación:
La imagen de la arqueología en la sociedad a través de los medios de comunicación, sociedad y patrimonio arqueológico, público y yacimientos arqueológicos en los medios de comunicación, las noticias sobre el patrimonio arqueológico, etc.

PRIMER SIMPOSIO INTERNACIONAL DE DNA ANTIGUO EN EL LABORATORIO NACIONAL DE GENÓMICA PARA LA BIODIVERSIDAD (LANGEBIO), CINVESTAV-IPN.
“Estableciendo un diálogo entre la Genómica y la Biología Molecular con la Arqueología y la Antropología en torno a estudios avanzados de DNA antiguo”

Este simposio, organizado por el Laboratorio de Paleogenómica del LANGEBIO, surge de la urgente necesidad de potenciar los estudios de DNA antiguo en México. Nuestro país cuenta con una gran cantidad de restos arqueológicos, antropológicos y paleontológicos que guardan información relevante para entender, con una dimensión temporal, la inmensa riqueza preservada en la biodiversidad mexicana. Esta fuente de conocimiento debe ser explorada de una manera sistemática, con técnicas avanzadas y dentro de marcos teóricos robustos, para maximizar los beneficios derivados del análisis, mediante técnicas destructivas, de piezas en extremo valiosas. En este contexto, resulta indispensable el intercambio de ideas entre expertos en DNA antiguo que están aplicando secuenciación de última generación, con arqueólogos, antropólogos, genetistas y microbiólogos que poseen marcos teóricos específicos de su área de acción. Así pues, invitamos a la comunidad científica mexicana interesada en el tema, a participar en este singular simposio, asistiendo a las conferencias, participando activamente en las rondas de preguntas e incluso presentando pósters en los que además de trabajos de DNA antiguo pueden exponerse hipótesis, ideas, proyectos y estudios relacionados con el apasionante campo del DNA antiguo, que recientemente ha alcanzado el nivel genómico.

El alimento es una necesidad vital. Ya sea en forma sólida o líquida, el hecho de comer va más allá de la simple nutrición humana porque hasta el más sencillo acto de transformación de productos alimenticios está condicionado por comportamientos culturales. La idea de placer, el tabú o las experiencias sensitivas están estrechamente asociadas a la alimentación y a la práctica cultural que se considera adecuada. Además, la comensalidad, comer y beber en compañía, define el grupo social y posibilita experiencias de socialización, que son tan diversas como los propios modos de alimentación.

Estas consideraciones han sido una constante asumida en muchos estudios antropológicos pero pocas veces se han acompañado del estudio de sus dimensiones materiales ni tampoco de toda su profundidad histórica. Aquí se abre un amplio y fructífero campo para el análisis arqueológico de la alimentación cotidiana y festiva, desde puntos de vista que integren el ciclo de la producción, los intercambios y el consumo en una perspectiva histórica.

Esta Reunión pretende, pues, reunir a especialistas sobre la Protohistoria en el Mediterráneo occidental para exponer y debatir cuestiones relacionadas con la alimentación durante el primer milenio a.C. Los temas a tratar pueden ser tan diversos como lo es la propia comida y bebida, pero nos queremos acercar a la dieta, a los recipientes y equipamientos utilizados y a las prácticas culinarias desde las siguientes perspectivas:

- Prácticas culinarias: ¿qué, cómo, cuándo, quién cocina? (Sección A)
- El modo en que la alimentación contribuye a definir el grupo social y a acrecentar las diferencias en estilos de consumo y los modos de vida (Sección B)
- Las relaciones entre cocina, alimentación y género (Sección C)
- Las diferencias culturales en dietas y en equipamientos asociados a la cocina: vajillas, utensilios, instalaciones (Sección D)
- El papel social de las bebidas alcohólicas: diferencias en bebidas y espacios o momentos de consumo (Sección E)
En definitiva, pretendemos que todos los participantes compartan el objetivo común de discutir quizás el aspecto más importante de la experiencia humana, la alimentación, como revelador de la variedad de comportamientos en el pasado.
El Congreso se estructura a partir de nueve ponencias invitadas organizadas en sesiones seguidas de debate. Además, pretendemos extender la participación al mayor número de interesados a través de la presentación de carteles, que deben ajustarse a los temas señalados más arriba.

III Congreso de Paleopatología en Sudamérica- PAMinSA III

El Tercer Encuentro de la Asociacion de Paleopatología en Sudamérica (PAMinSA III) está ya en marcha. Este encuentro tendrá lugar en Necochea-Quequén, Argentina entre el 14 y el 16 de Octubre de 2009. Con este encuentro PAMinSA III se pretende enriquecer la tradición que periódicamente lleva adelante la Paleopathology Association, reuniendo especialistas y estudiantes de todo el mundo. A continuación del PAMinSA III se desarrollarán las "IX Jornadas Nacionales de Antropología Biologica" en Puerto Madryn (Argentina).

I Congreso Internacional sobre espacios urbanos en el Occidente Mediterráneo (ss. VI-VIII)

Toledo albergará el I Congreso Internacional sobre espacios urbanos en el Occidente MediterráneoToletum Visigodo ha organizado el I Congreso Internacional sobre "Espacios Urbanos en el Occidente Mediterráneo, siglos VI-VIII".

Este foro, al que ya han confirmado su presencia destacados investigadores españoles y europeos, tendrá lugar en el Campus Tecnológico de la Antigua Fábrica de Armas, entre el 30 de septiembre y 3 de octubre.

Durante el Congreso, los ponentes expondrán sus tesis sobre la creación y evolución de las grandes urbes entre los siglos VI y VIII en toda la cuenca mediterránea, incluido el norte de África, coincidente con el reinado visigodo en España, según informa Toletum Visigodo en nota de prensa.

Las intervenciones irán desgranando tanto el punto de vista urbano-paisajístico y desarrollo ideológico-político, como el de la configuración de las ciudades en cuanto a lugar de convivencia cotidiana y centros de desarrollo para su entorno.

En este contexto tendrá una gran relevancia lo que se va conociendo de las ciudades visigodas, especialmente de la Ciudad Regia de Toledo y que correrá a cargo de los directores científicos del yacimiento de la Vega Baja, Ricardo Izquierdo y Lauro Olmo.

Teniendo en cuenta que el periodo entre los siglos VI y VIII es uno de las menos estudiados y conocidos de la historia de España, el Congreso será sumamente importante para contrastar los modelos urbanos de otras urbes contemporáneas en Francia y las riberas mediterráneas europea y africana con la antigua capital visigoda hispana de Toledo.

Hasta que han aflorado los primeros vestigios en el yacimiento de la Vega Baja, muy poco o nada se sabía de cómo podría ser la configuración de una ciudad en ese periodo tras la caída del Imperio Romano Occidental. Lo más parecido en España, con independencia de sus dimensiones, se puede encontrar en el yacimiento arqueológico de Recópolis, en la provincia de Guadalajara.

The Bone Diagenesis (BD) meeting looks back on a successful history of more than 2 decades. The meeting was originally initiated by Robert Hedges from the Department of Archaeology, University Oxford. The first BD meeting took place in 1988 and about every 4 years thereafter. The scientific results have been published in several special issues of high-ranking international journals from a range of disciplines.

The purpose of the BD meeting is to bring together scientists from different disciplines such as archaeology, anthropology, palaeontology, palaeobiology, geochemistry, mineralogy, genetics, forensics, taphonomy and others working on ancient bones and teeth as archives to reconstruct the behaviour and life history of vertebrates as well as their environment and their taphonomy.

Fossil bones and teeth yield important information about the phylogeny and evolution of vertebrates as well as the life history of the individual animal or human being. With regard to their chemical composition fossils record information about the growth, diet, thermophysiology and mobility of the individual as well as climate and habitat. Ancient DNA may enable us to infer phylogenetic relations and the geographic origin of species.

Such in vivo signals may be altered during the process of fossilisation of bones while their histology is often preserved and increasingly used in vertebrate palaeontology. The chemical and mineralogical changes during diagenesis are a valuable source of information in their own right. They enable us to characterize the post mortem history, taphonomy and diagenetic milieu as well as to trace the fossil provenance.

For the 6th BD meeting we are looking for scientific contributions dealing with the:
(1) Understanding of the post-mortem diagenetic processes and their role in the preservation or destruction of primary information;
(2) Development of new proxies and analytical methods to quantify diagenetic alteration and processes;
(3) Use of chemical or histological proxies in fossil bones and teeth to infer lifetime or taphonomic processes.

Aleš Hrdlička was a most distinguished Czech-American physical anthropologist. He it was who founded the American Journal of Physical Anthropology and also the American Association of Physical Anthropologists, arguably the two most influential entities in the world of physical anthropology. He never forgot his Czech origins and it is most fitting that Professor Pavel Bláha and his colleagues in Prague organize at regular intervals an Aleš Hrdlička Congress to keep his memory and his contributions alive and green. I am convinced that the Vth Congress in this series will enjoy the same success and creative spirit that have been the mark of its predecessors.

Workshop sobre Marcadores de Stress Musculoesquelético (Julio’09)

Workshop in Musculoskeletal Stress Markers (MSM): limitations and achievements in reconstruction of past activity patterns

El Workshop (taller) de Marcadores de Estrés Musculoesqueléticos (CSM): logros y limitaciones en la reconstrucción de los patrones de actividad en la antigüedad, está organizado por el Centro de Investigaciones sobre Antropología y Salud, y se celebrará en Coimbra (Portugal), entre el 2-3 de Julio de 2009.

En el marco de los estudios MSM, este workshop pretende contribuir a la discusión global de la eficacia de las enthesopathias así como las metodologías y la terminología.

El workshop está organizado en las siguientes sesiones: metodologías, la aplicación de los MSM sobre las colecciones esqueléticas identificadas y sobre poblaciones arqueológicas y otras que contribuyan al desarrollo de los MSM. Cada sesión se iniciará con una conferencia magistral.

El worshop concluirá con una sesión plenaria de discusión para el intercambio de perspectivas sobre la MSM, es decir, su fiabilidad, y promover nuevas vías de investigación.

XV Coloquio Internacional de Antropología Física. 18 al 23 de octubre de 2009. Mérida, Yucatán

El Comité Organizador del XV Coloquio Internacional de Antropología Física “Juan Comas” invita a profesionales, académicos y estudiantes interesados o involucrados en temas relacionados con el quehacer antropológico a participar en esta reunión que tendrá lugar del 18 al 23 de octubre del presente año en la ciudad de Mérida Yucatán.

La celebración bianual de este Coloquio se ha convertido en una plataforma de debate académico sobre los resultados de investigación, posiciones teóricas, métodos y técnicas de trabajo entre los antropólogos físicos y biólogos humanos de México y el resto del mundo. Por lo mismo su realización, prácticamente ininterrumpida desde 1980, lo ha convertido en un espacio de encuentro tradicional para los investigadores y docentes de la antropología física y disciplinas afines, así como de formación para estudiantes de licenciatura y posgrado

X CONGRESO NACIONAL DE PALEOPATOLOGÍA

El X Congreso Nacional de Paleopatología, que tendrá lugar este año en Madrid del 3 al 5 de septiembre, poseerá un muy sugerente lema: “Paleopatología: ciencia multidisciplinar”.

La Paleopatolgía es una ciencia con un importante auge en la Península Ibérica, siendo la Sociedad Española de Paleopatología motor y fiel exponente de ese impulso. Hoy en día, la investigación en Paleopatología se nutre de muchas fuentes y participa de disciplinas diversas: Medicina, Antropología Física, Arqueología, Tafonomía, Genética, Ecología, Histología, Arqueozoología, Paleontología, Bioquímica … Sin su concurso, la Paleopatología nunca podría alcanzar sus ambiciosas metas

Este es el fundamento del lema elegido para este X Congreso Nacional, Paleopatología: ciencia multidisciplinar. Cuanto más profundicemos en esa dimensión plural, mayor será el progreso en nuestro objetivo común de conocer mejor el pasado.

Desde hace ya más de veinte años, los Congresos Nacionales vienen sirviendo como vía de intercambio de información entre grupos de trabajo y de investigación. En esta ocasión se propone Madrid como sede, con la participación en la organización de las Universidades Complutense y Autónoma
